An Inch too far for Morgan

Morgan first full blown game saw the boys from Dundee travel up to the Inch to play Perthshire in the SRU Shield Competition.

Morgan first full blown game saw the boys from Dundee travel up to the Inch to play Perthshire in the SRU Shield Competition.

Perthshire had already dispatched Orkney in this competition and were confident coming into this game against Morgan.

The start of the game saw Morgan pressurise Perthshire which resulted in three penalties within a fifteen minute period, however with a gusty cross wind, Graeme Kiddie could not convert penalties to points.

It was apparent this new seasons scrummaging law will be an issue for forwards to get a grip with. This saw the referee talking to both sets of forwards and scrum halves about the new laws. Morgan for some reason did not listen or did not understand the referees interpretation of the Law which resulted in the 4 Yellow Cards being shown to Morgan players in the first half.

The result of Morgan losing players to the sin bin saw Perthshire taking full advantage and for them to run in try's from various set piece moves or from open play.

Halftime score 23-0

The Second half pep talk by the Captain saw Morgan come out with more determination and for the first quarter of the second half saw Morgan run some good moves only to be thwarted by some good defensive work by Perthshire's back line. Unfortunately in one of these moves our Captain John Brady took a heavy knock which saw him leave the field of play. This seamed to affect the team and soon Perthshire were back dominating the set pieces and line outs which resulted in some good moves by Perthshire and further tries for the Men in Black and White.

Near the end of the match Perthshire were penalised in front of the posts and Graeme Kiddie slotted the Penalty over the post for our first points of the Game. However the game at that point was well out of reach for the boys in Black and Gold as we had been well beaten by a well drilled and more savvy Perthshire side.

Final Score 40 - 3

Lots to do in the coming week for the Coaches and playing staff to get the team up and ready for our first league game of the season against St Andrews University down at Forfar Road KO 3pm
